Chapter 21 Serena

Tristan stopped dead in his tracks, Serena bumping into him from behind. This guy was solid, it was like running into a wall. They had reached the spot where he had left the kayak, except it wasn’t there.

“Sorry,” Serena mumbled before she saw what he was staring at. “Did someone steal our kayak?” She asked in outrage, hands on her hips.

“It seems like it.” He simply answered, his blood boiling. Cursed Atlas! He silently cursed with no doubt in his mind regular mortals were not responsible for this.

“How rude!” Serena said angrily as she swirled around as if to find the culprit, but there was no one else in sight. “What are we supposed to do now?” She said, sounding exasperated. Tristan chuckled silently; she was adorable when her temper flared. Tristan turned, looking at Kailua beach in the distance.

“We have two options; we can wait for someone to come along.” Tristan said nonchalantly. Serena winced. She could see small figures on Kailua beach in the distance, but no one would be able to tell they were in distress.

“Or?” She urged Tristan, waiting for him to give a better option.

“Swim across.” He finally answered, motioning the shores of Kailua beach.

“Sure, with my super fin powers I can handle that no problem.” Serena exclaimed sarcastically.

“It’s not as bad as it looks.” Tristan replied, detecting her lack of enthusiasm at the idea.

“I’d rather not be shark bait.” Serena pointed out. She had watched shark week on the national geographic channel and knew there were plenty of shark attacks in Hawaii.

“I’ve been tracking the sharks that could potentially enjoy gnawing on your pretty flesh, they haven’t been in these parts for some time.” Tristan said comically. Serena’s cheek turned a nice shade of red and she wondered how he could be so eager to swim this far out in the ocean.

“What about Deep Blue?” She argued. Deep blue was one of the largest female white sharks that had been spotted by divers in Oahu feasting on a sperm whale carcass a few days ago. Tristan was surprised Serena knew this information.

“It wasn’t anywhere near here, and besides, as pretty as you look, you're not as attractive to her as a sperm whale carcass.” Tristan teased trying to sound reassuring. His confidence didn’t waver, making it easier to even consider the ridiculous idea.

“What about tiger sharks? Weren’t there almost a dozen attacks in the last year? I thought I read an article on two snorkelers who actually swam from here to Kailua beach and didn’t get so lucky.” Serena said, rubbing her upper arms nervously as her eyes gazed at the open water.

“Then we wait.” Tristan said as he watched her body relax relieved to hear him say the words.

“How long do you think it’ll be before anyone shows up here?” Serena asked, trying to avoid committing to the idea of swimming the long distance into open water. Maybe she had watched too many movies.

“Could be hours, or days.” Tristan answered.

“I can’t believe I’m even considering this.
